Doyen of the European scholars of Near Eastern archaeology, he has been Director since 1980 of the Italian archaeological mission ISMEO in Yemen, where his discoveries have helped reconstruct the prehistory and pre-Islamic history of that country. He is a Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology at the Instituto Universitario Orientale of Naples.
